YOSA Summer Symphony Camp offers week-long session with unique opportunities for band and orchestral studies, alternative musical styles, composition, and chamber music. Campers will join other musicians to hone their skills, meet new friends, and perform music!

High School Band and Full Orchestra

Eligibility: Age 13-18 and
Strings: 3+ years of experience / Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion: 2+ years of experience

High school band and orchestra students will join together for the most musically advanced summer full orchestra experience in South Texas. The camp includes both string orchestra and wind ensemble repertoire, but the centerpiece of the program is the study and performance of advanced symphonic repertoire with YOSA faculty conductors, culminating in a finale concert.

Middle School String Orchestra

Eligibility: Age 10-13 and strings only, 1+ year of experience

Middle school string players can take their skills to the next level with a fun week of orchestra rehearsals, sectional coachings, and other musical activities. Three different orchestra levels, divided by ability and experience, ensure each musician will have an appropriate and enjoyable experience, culminating in a finale concert.

Orchestra X

Eligibility: Age 12-18 and strings only, 2+ years of experience

Orchestra X celebrates string music from beyond the classical repertoire, incorporating rock, pop, Broadway, and Latin grooves. Middle and high school musicians will explore improvisation and have the chance to jam with a powerful rhythm section of guitar and drums. A longstanding YOSA summer tradition, Orchestra X will fill up fast.

Composition Seminar

Eligibility: Age 13-18 and working knowledge of music notation

The YOSA Composition Seminar gives young composers the chance to hone their skills with an experienced mentor, composer Michael Ippolito. Working daily at computers with music notation software, participants will compose and edit their pieces for a final performance and recording session featuring professional musicians playing each students’ work.

String Quartet Seminar

Eligibility: Age 12-18 and violins, violas and cellos only, 2+ year of experience

Presented in partnership with CASA (the Cadenza Academy of San Antonio), the YOSA String Quartet Seminar offers dedicated middle and high school musicians the chance to develop chamber music skills, with daily quartet coachings, master classes, and repertoire study, leading to a final performance. Grammy-nominated string quartet Camerata San Antonio will not only teach and mentor participants but will also present a concert as artists-in-residence.

All sessions of YOSA Summer Symphony Camp are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each week will have a closing concert on Friday at 3:00 p.m.

Camp Tuition

YOSA Summer Symphony Camp 2020 tuition is $335 per each one-week session. A non-refundable deposit of $75 per camper is due at the time of registration. All tuition is due by the end of June.

Extended Care

Extended supervised care is available as early as 8:00 a.m. and as late as 5:00 p.m. at an additional fee of $25 per week.

Lunch Option

Campers can opt into the lunch plan for $45 per week. This option must be ordered and paid in full by the end of May. Campers are also allowed to bring their own lunch and snacks.

YOSA is committed to making our activities accessible for families, regardless of financial constraints. Tuition assistance is offered as part of camp registration and is based on a family’s income, household size, and other family or financial circumstances. Families can expect strict confidentiality regarding their assistance application and results. Every effort will be made to meet the needs of young musicians and their families.

When is camp?

YOSA Summer Symphony Camp session take place in July. Each week will feature a final concert on Friday afternoon.

Do I have to audition to go to YOSA Summer Symphony Camp?

All campers (except Composition Seminar) will audition to be placed in the appropriate camp ensemble. These auditions take place in June.

Are there age limits for YOSA Summer Symphony Camp?

Am I able to miss any portion of camp due to extenuating circumstances?

Campers may miss no more than one full day of camp. If a camper misses more than a day, they will not be able to participate in the remainder of the session. Campers should submit an Absence/Tardy Notification Form HERE for any absence.
