YOSA Philharmonic closes the season with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a gripping journey from darkness to triumph. The program also includes Walton’s Crown Imperial, a spotlight on the 2025/26 YOSA Concerto Competition winner , and a performance by YOSA Capriccio Strings.
About Zhiwei Huang, Violin
Winner of the 2025/26 YOSA Concerto Competition, Violinist Zhiwei Huang is a senior at Claudia Taylor Johnson High School in San Antonio, and studies with Matthew Zerweck. He began playing the violin at age five with Chen Yu-An in Taiwan. He has twice been selected for the TMEA All-State Symphony Orchestra and serves as Assistant Concertmaster of the YOSA Philharmonic. He won the Outstanding Performer award at the UIL State Solo Contest, placing in the top 3% of performers statewide. In the summer of 2024, he was selected to attend the Credo National Festival at the Chicago Symphony Center, performing Mahler’s First Symphony. Before moving to Texas, Zhiwei served as Assistant Concertmaster of the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Ensemble and placed 7th nationally at the Taiwan National Student Music Competition.
