YOSA Dedicates Mariachi Camp Concert to Belle Ortiz

YOSA joined in celebrating the life and legacy of Belle Ortiz, who passed away in San Antonio on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. Her tireless advocacy and inspirational teaching established mariachi as a central part of music education at both the high school and college level in San Antonio. For more than 50 years, generations of young musicians have fallen in love with mariachi music, thanks to the programs she started and inspired.

We were honored to collaborate with Mariachi Campanas de América—the ensemble Belle Ortiz founded in 1978 with her husband, Juan Ortiz—during our 2017 Purple Rain Live concert.

Our July 21 Summer Symphony Camp finale concert at YOSA Mariachi Camp was dedicated to her memory and many TV stations showed up to capture the moment.
