 In 2017/18, YOSA’s Orchestra program consists of nine orchestras (two full orchestras, a wind ensemble, a flute choir, and five string orchestras) of graded ability. Musicians are placed in the orchestra appropriate for their ability through the annual audition process in early-June. All auditions must be completed by the published June audition dates. YOSA will not offer late auditions once orchestras have reached capacity. To sign up for YOSA, please visit the How to Sign Up page.

YOSA’s most advanced orchestra is comprised of the very best young musicians in the San Antonio area. The YOSA Philharmonic performs professional-level repertoire in premier venues at home and abroad, collaborating regularly with internationally renowned soloists and composers.

Highlights of the 2017/18 season include:

  • YOSA Philharmonic GS1Exciting symphonic repertoire, including Bernstein’s Candide Overture, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, John Williams’ Star Wars Suite, and more;
  • June 2018 concert tour to Spain, as part of San Antonio’s Tricentennial celebration;
  • Side-by-side performance with the San Antonio Symphony;
  • Season-opening Mo-Ranch Retreat Weekend in Hunt, Texas (August 18-20, 2017);
  • Concerts at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

YOSA Symphonic Winds brings together top young musicians for high-level performance of advanced wind ensemble repertoire. The Symphonic Winds season opens with an August kick-off retreat at Mo-Ranch. Musicians from YOSA Symphonic Winds will rotate into YOSA Symphony to gain experience with orchestral repertoire. YOSA Symphonic Winds and YOSA Symphony will present a concert at the Tobin Center on February 11, 2018 with the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet.

Musicians in the YOSA Symphony master a variety of advanced orchestral skills by performing unabridged pieces from the standard repertoire for full orchestra. The Symphony season opens with an August kick-off retreat at Mo-Ranch. Woodwind, brass, and percussion players rotate between the YOSA Symphony and YOSA Symphonic Winds. YOSA Symphony and YOSA Symphonic Winds will present a concert at the Tobin Center on February 11, 2018 with the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet.

YOSA’s newest string orchestra introduces musicians to a variety of bowing techniques and historical styles, while also developing more advanced control of rubato, pharasing and expression.
