Executive Director’s Note
Brandon Henson, Executive Director

At YOSA, we believe that all youth deserve equal access to participation and excellence in music education, regardless of economic, social, and other barriers. Every YOSA Orchestra musician receives a subsidy that covers more than half of the cost of their participation. In addition, YOSA offers more than $70,000 in financial assistance to those who may not be able to afford the remaining modest tuition fees and more than $130,000 of free services in our school partnerships.

YOSA’s fiscal year ends soon and we need your help to meet our financial goals that will allow YOSA to continue to offer transformative services to 3,300 young musicians. Please make a donation today to help us finish our fiscal year on a high note! And, don’t forget to tell your friends how you help change kids’ lives through music. Thank you for all your support.

If you want proof that San Antonio’s Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is a special venue, watch musicians walk on stage for their first rehearsal. The eyes of rock stars and opera singers alike light up at the hall’s architectural splendor and acoustical warmth.

Earlier this month, nearly a thousand young musicians experienced this thrill during the inaugural YOSA Invitational. On May 15 and 16, bands and orchestras from ten middle schools and six high schools took the stage as our guests, and they all had a great time. One high school orchestra director wrote, “The YOSA Invitational will surely be a significant destination activity and performance highlight of school ensembles for years to come, and one of unparalleled quality.”

How has playing music helped you?
Apart from being an outlet for expression, I think music has given me a lot more organization in my life and has introduced me to so many great people.

How has being in YOSA helped you?
Through YOSA I’ve been able to play all kinds of repertoire I normally would never have gotten the chance to perform and to play with so many great musicians.

YOSA will see 72 seniors graduate in 2017. These young musicians have participated in YOSA from 1 to 8 years, and collectively have 291 years of making music in a YOSA orchestra. Out of the 72 seniors, 28 of them have been in YOSA for 5 or more years! Congratulations, seniors, and thank you for all the wonderful memories and for changing our lives through your music.
