YOSA Announces Troy Peters as New Music Director
After an extensive national search, the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio is pleased to announce Troy Peters as YOSA's Music Director, effective August 2009.
Mr. Peters is currently the Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association and Conductor of the Middlebury College Orchestra. He has received international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock guitarist and composer Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. Peters has guest conducted many groups, including the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Mahler Festival, the Vermont Mozart Festival, the Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra and the Opera Company of Middlebury.
During his 14 years tenure in Vermont, Mr. Peters has dramatically grown the program to reach over 500 students each year. In 2001, he opened the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michael's College, the VYOA administrative and rehearsal facility. He has also led the Vermont Youth Orchestra in a sell-out concert at Carnegie Hall and tour to China in 2007. This coming July, he will lead the orchestra on a tour to France.
As YOSA's Music Director, Mr. Peters will conduct YOSA's most advanced orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra, lead YOSA's faculty of conductors and coaches and actively seek community engagement opportunities among San Antonio's schools and music educators.
"Because I have long been aware of San Antonio's vibrant cultural scene and YOSA's national reputation for excellence, I am especially excited at the prospect of joining the YOSA team," Peters said. "During my visit in March, I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm of the students and staff. YOSA's vision for the future looks bright and I can't wait to be a part of making it happen."
"Troy's appointment represents a major milestone for YOSA," Executive Director Steven Payne said. "The need to move to a full-time Music Director position was becoming more and more self-evident as YOSA's scope and reach has grown in the last few years. I feel honored to have the opportunity to work with someone of the experience and caliber of Troy Peters. Everyone at YOSA is very proud that we are able to attract a Music Director with his ability and experience. We are all looking forward to welcoming Troy and his family to San Antonio."
