Roosevelt Compact
YOSA along with four other non-profit organizations was selected as a grantee by the Rackspace Foundation in an initiative to "create an engaged school environment like no other in the country leading to economic, social and cultural recovery of the community around the Roosevelt High School Cluster."
YOSA was chosen to provide high quality after-school programming through the Roosevelt Cluster orchestra programs. Schools involved are: Roosevelt High School, White Middle School, Krueger Middle School, Camelot Elementary, Montgomery Elementary, Walzem Elementary and Windcrest Elementary.
Through this program, YOSA will help implement the following programs/activities in these schools:
1. High quality classical music exposure to all 4th and 5th graders. Students will attend up to four San Antonio Symphony Young People's Concerts throughout the school year. They will be prepared for the concert with a visit from YOSA's Music Director Troy Peters in the days leading up to the concert.
2. Fifth Grade Strings mentorship program. A professional teacher mentor will be responsible for assisting Roosevelt Cluster Orchestra Directors as needed in the instruction of 5th graders at four elementary schools with the ultimate goal of creating a world-class school strings program in the Roosevelt Cluster. Mentors will teach group and private lessons as well as assisting students one-to-one in a class setting when needed. The mentor is also responsible for actively promoting the string program and participating in recruiting.
3. Private lesson and instrument scholarships for selected students at the middle and high schools with an added qualifier that students audition for YOSA and/or participate in UIL solo and ensemble contest.
4. A variety of activities including an evening orchestra trip to a San Antonio Symphony subscription concert, a spring orchestra enrollment campaign and professional development opportunities for the Orchestra Directors.
