John Frederick

A native of San Antonio, John Frederick earned his A.B. from Princeton and his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard, all in Chemistry. Dr. Frederick joined the Chemistry faculty of the University of Nevada, Reno in 1988, where he served as the director of the Chemical Physics program as well as the chair of the department.

Dr. Frederick has received numerous awards for his teaching, including the Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Arts and Science in 1995, and the F. Donald Tibbits Distinguished Teacher Award from the University in 1996. From 1997 to 2004, he served first as Treasurer, then as President of the Telluride Science Research Center, a non-profit organization that promotes workshops in molecular science. In 2007, he accepted a position as Senior Fellow with the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, where he helped launch a national campaign to promote science and mathematics teacher preparation.

In 2008, Dr. Frederick returned to San Antonio as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at San Antonio. He plays a leading role in guiding the university towards the goal of becoming one of Texas’s next premier research institutions. Dr. Frederick is married to Mimi Yu, the Associate Director of UTSA’s East Asia Institute, and has two teenage children, both of whom participate in YOSA.
