If you want proof that San Antonio’s Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is a special venue, watch musicians walk on stage for their first rehearsal. The eyes of rock stars and opera singers alike light up at the hall’s architectural splendor and acoustical warmth.

Earlier this month, nearly a thousand young musicians experienced this thrill during the inaugural YOSA Invitational. On May 15 and 16, bands and orchestras from ten middle schools and six high schools took the stage as our guests, and they all had a great time. One high school orchestra director wrote, “The YOSA Invitational will surely be a significant destination activity and performance highlight of school ensembles for years to come, and one of unparalleled quality.”

The Tobin Center will also be home to our 2017/18 Gold Series. Next season’s concerts will celebrate San Antonio’s Tricentennial, as well as the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Wars and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein. Subscriptions are available from the Tobin Center box of ce for these programs:

  • Star Wars and Other Epic Adventures—Favorites from Star Wars, thrilling music by Chávez and Borodin, and a world premiere by YOSA alumnus Niccolo Athens (November 5, 2017)
  • P.D.Q. Bach and Musical Comedy—A hilarious new piano concerto by ctitious composer P.D.Q. Bach, along with lighthearted music by Bernstein and Kodály (January 28, 2018)
  • A Joyful Noise—Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating Fifth Symphony, plus Bernstein’s jubilant Chichester Psalms with the choirs of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Temple Beth-El (May 6, 2018)

In the meantime, though, we look forward to another busy summer. We are currently in the middle of YOSA Summer Symphony Camp, our two-week day camp at Saint Mary’s Hall. This year’s highlights include the return of guest artists in residence, the Apollo Chamber Players, and a camp finale concert, free and open to the community, at the Majestic Theatre on June 23.

Thank you for being part of the community that helps YOSA change kids lives through music!
